problems saving fonts or symbols

I have run into this problem several times in powerpoint
2002--When saving a presentation(not embedding fonts)
with several inserted symbols throughout, mainly arrows
and degree symbols, some fonts that are listed as true
type don't save correctly, but the main problem is the
symbols save as small boxes. I understand some printers
will not print these things, but powerpoint itself seems
to not save them, and worst of all, changes all of them
throughout. How can I change this, and how do I correct
them if it happens again-other than going through the
whole presentation and correcting each individually?

Does the problem only come to light when you print it out?
