set default font in Insert-Symbol menu Powerpoint

I teach mathematics and use the symbols in my powerpoint presentations and
word documents. I MSWord when I click on the Insert Drop Down Menu and click
on Symbol. The default font is the one i last used, namely symbols in my
case.

However the same action in PowerPoint - click on the Insert Drop Down Menu
and click on Symbol always gives me the normal text font. I then have to
click on the down arrow to find the symbols each and everytime I want to
insert a symbol.

Why is this action handled differently?

Different programmers at the wheel, I guess.
In any case, try setting the text box to Symbol first, then insert symbol.
It'll be set to Normal Text, but for that text box, normal text will be Symbol
