I have some games which are old (kampfgruppe, panzer general
etc.) and used to run them under DOS and win98, and I can now
run them only under safe mode in winxp. I used to run them
under normal startup too but it's no longer possible. If i start
windows normally the game just pops its startup/title screen and
gets stuck there, I have to alt-tab out of it to close it. I
have tried ending all the processes in task manager that run
under my username but still no luck.

Any suggestions?

have you tryed xp compatibility mode, right
click>properties. but some old games will not play.

Have you set the Compatibility to Win 98 in the properties of the game icon
??

Compatibility mode is not for oldgames.
Windows XP is an networking OS not a gaming os.
That said, windows just bought connectix , you can download a virtual PC
here.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/
Install dos 6.22 or something from here.

Then install whatever game you want through the virtual network and have
fun! ;)

ps. linux makes you stupid :P

How the **** was that a wrong answer you top posting ****wit?
Compatibility mode works about 3% of the time versus VPC works 100% of the
time.

Ran into the same problem when I was looking at Win95 vs NT. Windows XP is
an NT based os. Any games (like Bicycle Solitaire) won't work because they
want to get to the video card directly and NT/XP(maybe 2000 also) won't
allow programs to get to the video card without going through the os. I
guess this was Microsoft's way of fixing video problems/colficts with Win95
& earlier os'.
