Problems opening attachments in windows mail

Cameron

I have recently done an upgrade on my internet explorer. I am unsure if my
problem relates to this; however, I am unable to open documents in my emails
(windows mail). I did not have any problems before hand. "This file does
not have a program associated with it..." or "windows cannot find
'image.jpg'. Make sure you typed the name correctly..." " there was an error
opening this document. This file cannot be found" are the error messages I
receive. This is occurring so far with .pps , .pdf, and .jpg attachments on
newly received messages and saved messages. Has any one had the same sort of
problem or have a solution?

Would that be IE8 ? If you don't know : open Internet Explorer > top, click
Help > click About Internet Explorer. It'll tell you what version you have.
If yes, so far, the best solution is to un-install IE8. The system will
revert back to IE7 by itself.
There are some " workarounds " for your problems, but they are just
band-aide solutions. Read some of the posts in this newsgroup, you'll find
many related to your problems.

Goto winhelponline.com and solutions are posted there.
You need a Utility which un-associates certain filetypes e.g. MSWord, PDF,
etc - you CANNOT do that thru Control panel in retarded Vista.
You need Indian guy who wrote a utulity, but I forgot the name...

Just Google for these keywords (togetehr):
Winhelponline, can't open word attachements, unable to open PDF

Winhelponine is the only one with worting solution.

I also couldn't open Word, PDF, but now OK
Thanks for the crap called Vista.

Hopefully Windows7 will be much like WIndowsXP - BUSINESS oriented, working
OS< not a childish multimedia toy

What you recommend here only is of help if there is an association
problem for a certain file type.

It has nothing to do with the IE8-WinMail bug which affects many systems
(though not the majority) after installing IE8.

There is no fix for this problem so far.

As you say you had problems with DIC and PDF attachments and don't
mention other file types: How about JPG and TXT?
The latter are crucial ones.
The problems can be reduced to JPG and TXT files (all other files types
opening fine) with a workaround:
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties.
In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%.
Click OK.
Restart Windows Mail and try opening attachments.

AFAICS you are having two different problems:
(a) Missing file-type associations and (b) the in general IE8-WinMail
problem.

For the first sort of problems recreating the necessary associations is
necessary.
What to do depends on the type of file.
Pls let us know for which type of file you receive the error message
"This file does not have a program associated with it.".
We'll look up which fix will fit.

Apart from that there is the IE8-WinMail bug which affected many systems
(though not all) after installing IE8.> This is occurring

problem or have a solution?

You are not alone! <g> As said above the problem appears quite often (I
have it in all of my four computers).

There is no fix - except uninstalling IE8 (
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700/en-us )

Pls be so kind as to read my replies in this thread.

Then decide whether you can live with the problem reduced to JPG and TXT
files.
If so, apply my workaround.
If not, uninstall IE8.

If any further questions just ask them.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

I am having the same problem (file cannot be found) just after installing IE
8. However your workaround wont work as the "Start In" field while there is
not active/that is I cant edit that field.

How can I activate that field to type in %UserProfile% there?
