Can not open any attachments

I am not able to open any attachments at all. When I try to open a PDF
file, I receive an error message "There was an error opening this document.
This file can not be found. Yet, if I save the file attachment and open it
through another means I can open the document. Cannot open jpeg files or
Internet Explorer pages

Did you just installed IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

I am in the same position. Not only will my attachments suddenly not open
but I can't even start a new thread on this board. It just opens the next
comment.

When I am opening Windows Mail, the program comes up but I am asked for my
username and password 5-6 times, only to be told it timed out. I'm not
totally computer illiterate but this is becoming so frustrating that I'm
ready to go back to yahoo mail...the old way, which defeats the purpose of
having a new computer with Vista.

Internet Explorer 8 interferes with Windows Mail opening attachments.
You might try uninstalling IE8 (it should revert to IE7) and/or trying the
newer Windows Live Mail.

If you're trying to access the free US Yahoo account, then you can't use
WM/WLM. You need the Yahoo Plus account in order to access their POP3
server.

Installing IE8 without having first disabled all real-time system
protections can cause problems opening attachments in Windows Mail, Outlook
Express, Outlook, Windows Live Mail, and many other Mail Clients.

Me too! I've tried all the fixes that have been listed, and cannot seem to
open any attachments. I run AVG security, but have run Norton in the past.
I've uninstalled EI8 (I think). Help?

I'd seriously deny this!
The WinMail-IE8 bug which causes problems with opening attachments is
one thing.
The other things you report are something totally different.

The attachment problem can be solved by uninstalling IE8:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700 ).
And there is a workaround for most file types (pls see at and).
Not only will my attachments suddenly not
open but I can't even start a new thread on this board. It just
opens the next comment.

As said a different issue.
In case this problem is persistent, pls open a new thread (AFAICS you
are coming through the web-interface anyway) and explain a bit more what
you are trying and how the problem appears.

Same as above.
This has nothing to do with the attachment problem. It may be just
coincidence.

P.S. Attachment problem
The problems can be reduced to JPG and TXT files (all other
files types opening fine) with a workaround:
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties.
In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%.
Click OK.
Restart Windows Mail and try opening attachments.

JPG and TXT can be opened after saving them.
I for one can love with that (until the mysteries if this bug have been
unrevealed).

Unfortunately a typical "Mee-to" posting which does not describe the
problem :-( :-(

What do you mean by "all the fixes" ???
There are no fixes - except uninstalling IE(.
And it's not clear whether you really did that or not :-(

Besides that there is a workaround reducing the problem (pls see at
end).
I run AVG security, but have run
Norton in the past. I've uninstalled EI8 (I think). Help?

The first thing to do:
Check which version of IE8 you are working with:
In IE open "Help | Info" and check the version.

So how do I go about fixing this problem........very frustrated

Which problem do you want to fix??
This discussion's thread has been spoilt by Sicilian's jumping in with
additional problems.

If it's just the *ATTACHMENT** problem pls see below. If there are other
issues, pls open a new thread with a significant subject and a
description of the problem.

Attachment problem:
There is a bug which affects many systems (though not the majority)
after installing IE8.
There is no fix - except uninstalling IE8

However, the problems can be reduced to JPG and TXT files (all other
