Problems on bootup

B

Bobcat

I hope you can help me - I'm afraid it'll take some space to detail my
problem. A visitor installed CyberScrub in my computer, and used it to
try to speed up my system, which has been slow lately. He managed to
save several GB of hard-drive space by removing excess files, but
something else happened. When I booted up the computer this morning
Windows XP started to load, but a few seconds later this message
appeared: -

"The type of the file system is NTFS
Volume label is 40G.
One of your discs needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel
the disc
check but it is strongly recommended that you continue."

A 10-second countdown message followed, then: -

"Windows will now check the disc.
CHKDSC is verifying files (stage 1 0f 3)
File verification completed
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 0f 3)
Correcting error in index $I30 for file 4704"

the drive kept working, but obviously the procedure had stalled. I
waited 5 minutes then rebooted, this time cancelling the disc check
when the above message reappeared. Windows completed its bootup
successfully.

I can only concluded that something necessary has been erased. I'm not
as computer savvy as you people, but is there some way I can fix this
problem without seeking professional help?
Thanks.

What is your Windows XP CD as it is described on the face of the CD?
Does the CD include SP2?

What is your computer make and model? How old is it?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Sorry, I'm afraid the CD is lost so I can't answer that question
What is your computer make and model? How old is it?

Properties lists it as an Intel Pentium 4CPU, 2.40 GHz with 192 MB of
RAM. It's about two or so years old.
Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

Here's the list - I hope there aren't too many duplications as you
requested. The ones before 4:23 occurred before I booted my computer
early this morning just after 4:00 am: -

The lack of a Windows XP CD takes the possibilities of doing a Repair
Install and running System File Checker.

Have you backed up all important data files?

You have had System Restore set to monitor all drives but it should only
be monitoring your system (windows) C partition. You have had two errors
reporting failure on your second drive. You should check that monitoring
of all drives / partitions except C has been turned off.
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/drivedisable.html

I think the problem reported with System Restore may mean that you are
not able to restore to a point before CyberScrub was installed but see
if there are any points before that occurred.
http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html

The Application hang for Quicken is not germane to the main problem.

The problem with chkdsk is a worry.

Try running HD Tune(freeware).

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. You can also do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Are you correctly reporting the RAM as only 192 mb as this is
insufficient and is surprising for a machine only 2/3 years old?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Thanks for all the work you've put into your reply, Gerry. The items
you suggest will take some time and I'll try to work on them - as I
said I'm not as technically minded as most people at this website. I
only tried one of our suggestions - the Defrag analyser. It said that
a chkdsk session was scheduled for "C" (I've successfully done one on
my "F" drive - no problems). As I mentioned, the "C" request means
rebooting, a long arduous task that takes a long time. In the meantime
wish me luck. If I fail I'll turn the job over to a pro.

Try running HD Tune(freeware). That could be revealing.

It could easily have taken more than 5 minutes to scan the drive. I
would leave it for up to an hour or more if the drive is still working.
It found one error and was continuing.

Cheers,

Cliff
