Problems Networking Windows XP & 98

P

I am having problem networking my XP machine and my 98
machine. I have no hub but only a cross-over cable
connecting the two machines. I have run the Network
wizard but still seem to be having problems. I can share
the internet connection (dial-up facility on the XP
machine) but am having problems with the file & Printer
sharing. From the XP machine I can see the 98 machine
when I expand the workgroup (MSHOME) but do not have
visibility of any of the shared folders on the 98
machine. When I try to open the 98 machine I get a
message "You may not have permission for the network
resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find
out if you have access permission. Network path not
found". From the 98 machine I cannot see the XP machine
when I expand the Neighbourhood Network.

I had exact same problem. He is right. Firewall can
cause trouble, however, I bet you will find that your
workgroup names are different, like mshome vs. home.
That was my fix. I changed home to mshome so they were
both mshome, and wa la! try it!

Using the same workgroup name on all computers makes networking a bit
easier, and it's a good idea.

However, it isn't necessary. Windows networking supports multiple
workgroups, and each computer can access all of the computers in all
of the workgroups.

To see all of the workgroups in Windows 98, click Network
Neighborhood, then click Entire Network.

To see all of the workgroups in Windows XP, click My Network Places,
then click " View workgroup computers" and press the Backspace key.
