Problems Joining A Domain

Jim

Hi,

I am trying to join various Win200 and Win2003 servers to a Win2003 DC.
The problem I am experiencing is about 50% of the servers on my network can
join fine to the DC and the other 50% can't. The DC hosts the DNS for AD
on it and uses itself for DNS and forwards the rest. When I try to join a
server onto this domain I make sure that the server is using the DC as its
DNS server. The errors I get vary between servers and times I try to join
the domain. The errors are:

"Network Path Not Found"
"Login Failure : The target name is incorrect"
There is also an error about the Domain Controller not being present or
something along those lines.

I want to say that there is something most likely wrong with the DNS, but I
am not sure since half of the servers can join the domain fine. I try to
run netdiag on the DC but I get an error about something in the dnsapi.dll
file.

Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated as this is starting to
drive me crazy :)

Thanks Everyone!!

2 ways of doing this. By DHCP server or by assigning each member server a
static IP address and in including Host(A) lookup records in the forward
lookup zone for your Domain. check your cabling and all that crap too.
Compare the member servers that will join to the ones that won't. What's
different? if anything...

Add WINS and use it as a "backup" means to find the Domain. When joining,
are you using the FQDN of the Domain or the Netbios Name. If you are
depending only on DNS then you might want to use the FQDN of the domain
instead of a netbios version of the domain name when attempting to join.
By using both DNS and WINS at the same time you kinda cover all your bases
and narrow the opportunity for it to fail.
