Problems Installing New Software

Tonight I tried to install Quicken 2005. The install failed while trying to remove version 2003. After a few more attempts including creating a new account with administrator privileges Windows XP Home edition decided I needed to activate again. That was a real treat. Don't know why, but the activation Wizard could not find my cable modem. Had to call Microsoft and enter about 8 sets of 8 digit numbers. Amazingly, I got the entire sequence right and have activated again.

Question - I have only one account in Windows XP Home Ed. SP2. Of course that account has administrator privileges. However, I remember a Windows startup procedure that gave the option of starting in Safe Mode or in Administrator. I think that's what I need to do to get Quicken Installed. Anyone know how to log on as THE Administrator?

Tried starting in Safe Mode and the installer for Quicken would not run. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IMO, Intuit is the only software vendor with OS intrusion worse than
Symantec. They are the only source for solving problems with their
software since only they know what magic they apply. You might try
saving your quicken working files to a safe place (cd) and then remove
the old version from safe mode add/remove programs and then installing
the new version. However, I would consult the quicken knowledge base or
make the telephone call to quicken support.

I can't even find a number to call except one to order more software. Thanks for the reply. The uninstaller won't run from safe mode. I think the answer is the administrator account I mentioned. Just can't find it again. Cheers, Don R

The only problem with calling Intuit is that they have no integrity and want
to charge for even legitimate questions that should be free. They are rude
and obnoxious.

No luck installing Quicken, but I did remember how to get to the account called Administrator. I had to turn off automatic logon in Powertoys then start in safe mode. I was missing the account because of the automatic logon.
However, Quicken 2005 will not install over 2003 even in this mode. I've got way too much time into this issue. Although Intuit is bad about responding to user complaints, they are probably no worse than a lot of other companies. Thanks for the replies.

Don, I simply used the Restore option after uninstallung the old version.
Insert your back-up disk & restore in the 2005 Quicken.
