Problems installing External USB Hard drive in Win XP

Soumyadeep Paul

Hi,

I recently bought a 120 GB external USB 2.0 harddrive for my laptop
and have been trying to install it in Win XP (home edition). After
connecting it to the USB port (I have USB 1.1), XP seems to recognize
the harddisk - and I see "USB Mass Storage...". However, when I go to
Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Disk
Management, I do not see the hard disk listed there. My Computer
doesn't list the harddrive too. Can someone help me out with this? I
urgently need to edit a promo film for a client....

What could be the problem?

Thanx,
Soum

The instruction manual that came with the external casing+HD says that
XP has the necessary drivers - all I would need to do is to just plug
it in and XP should recognize it... which it does (The device manager
also says that the device is functioning properly)... except that the
manual also says that it should also show up in the drive list in Disk
Management - but that doesn't happen..... neither does it show up in
My Computer.

The HD is a Seagate...

If you haven't done so already, go out find and install the latest USB

This is a really old post, but I will "Chime in" anyway. My external drive
doesn't "Appear" in "My Computer" unless I leave it "Powered Off" during
booting, until I am completely booted, and then "Power On"... only then does
it appear.

I have just re-installed Windows xp (and applied all Windows patches) on my laptop in an attempt to fix this very problem
I have a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card that completly supports an external CD-RW and scanner
Plugging in an external USB2.0 HDD gives the exact problems discussed in this thread
Any help is welcome!

It's an even older post now and I am having the exact same problem. When I
look at System Information it says that the device cannot be started error
code 10. I can't find any reason for this. The drive says that all the
necessary drivers are supplied with W2K and XP and to not use the disc that
came with the drive. If I leave it turned on my computer will not boot even
though I have disabled boot other devices in the BIOS. If I wait until the
computer is fully booted it recognizes that a new device is present but will
not start it.

I disable Legacy Support in the bios with no change in the status. I still
have the same problem. The drive is recognized but I get Error Code 10. The
Device Cannot Start. I don't really have any other error information given. I
have changed USB ports and hubs. The other devices connected to the same USB
2.o hub work just fine even with this drive connected.

You either have a cable/connector problem or a driver problem. I suspect
the latter. Most USB external drives do not require a third party driver
but I think LaCie are an exception and suggest you visit LaCie site to see
whether they have a new driver for your drive.

My issue is not the exact same, but close. I have a system running XP Home
with SP 2 and has USB 1.1 ports. When I plug in an external USB 2.0 drive,
XP recognizes the drive as a 2.0 drive and wants me to connect it to a 2.0
port. Since my system does not have the 2.0 port, I cannot do this.
Sometimes the drive works, other times it gives me a "Cannot Start" error. I
have yet to determine why it sometimes works and othertimes doesn't. If
anyone has an idea why this is happening, can you share it?

I use the same drive on a Windows 2000 system with only 1.1 ports and
another XP system with 2.0 ports. On these latter two system, the external
drive works without problems.
