problems inserting sounds into powerpoint

I am using Powerpoint 2002 on Windows XP. I have a presentation with lots of
linked mp3s in it. To move the presentation on to other computers, I wanted
to edit the links to the sound files, to make them free of any file directory
information. I used a macro to do this, which came from this site:
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00433.htm

This seemed to work fine at first. But then all the sound files stopped
playing - when I checked the object info, I saw that the 'total playing time'
for the sound files had been set to 0. I deleted the objects from the
presentation, and tried to re-insert them - but now not all of them can be. I
get the error message 'PowerPoint couldn't insert a sound from the selected
file.' As far as I can tell, there is no difference between sound files that
can be inserted and sounds that can't. They are all mp3s, they are all
recorded at the same bitrate (56kbps), they are around the same length
(700k), they all play without problems in mp3 players. But it's 100%
consistent which files can be inserted, and which can't.

The only other thing which I have done recently is install Conduits Pocket
Slides, to allow me to put presentations on my Pocket PC.
