Problems downloading files

I am using IE6 with XP Home SP1, all was well until I discovered that I have
problems downloading .zip files.

When clicking on a hyperlink leading to a .zip file I used to get the option
to save the file to a location on my computer. Now .zip files are
automatically downloaded to a temporary folder. However, ring on the link
and selecting "Save Target As" still works okay.

I've tried adjusting/resetting the security controls in IE6. I've also
emptied and moved my IE temporary files. And I've checked the settings in
WinZIP which I also use. All with no luck.

I once had a similar problem downloading .exe and .rar files. I cured this
by re-formatting and re-installing XP (that was to solve another
problem-long story, don't ask). I don't really want to have to do this
again.

Thanks in advance, have a good Christmas.

I have a similar problem, so i tried the
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=177976.
My question is this: what is the correct file type in the
registered file types, that I need to "check the box..."
in?
and, after about 10 - 20 minutes of waiting for the file
to download, IE box comes up with: IE cannot download
from "....com". IE was not able to open this Internet
site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot
be found. Please try again later. This happens no matter
who's site i'm on. can you help me with this??
