Problems downloading files?

I'm running Windows XP Home edition (and have been for some time) but
suddenly, without any cause, I've been unable to download files from the
internet. PDF, Zip, swf and some .exe's. I cant update my Zone alarm as it's
an exe file.

Any suggestions on which of my settings are incorrect? Is it a fire wall
problem?

The error message tells me that Internet Explorer was not able to open the
internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found.

My version of adobe and winzip seems up to date. Any ideas?

Since you mentioned having Zone Alarm installed open it and look to see if
you have allowed access for all your programs that are listed. Also check
all your other ZA settings etc as it most likely is the source of your
problem. Next check your IE Security settings. If you are still having the
problem go to this Microsoft website:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q306837 and follow
Resolutions instructions.

Hi Northernstar,

The quickest to determine if ZA is the culprit is to simply disable
it. Try to access the sites in question, and see what happens. Make
sure your anti-virus is up to date before you go trying this--but I
think you'll be OK. Post back if you still have problems.

That way be the quickest way, but it's also the most dangerous. Unless you
have a router that provides firewall-like protection, connecting to the
internet without a firewall is foolhardy. It takes only a few seconds to get
infected with something like Blaster or Sasser, and an anti-virus program
won't help you.

I am having this same problem on my wife's machine after having reformatted
the hard drive, re-installing Windows XP Pro, all updates to the OS, Windows
Live OneCare, the latest version of java and the latest version of Adobe
reader. I have checked and double checked that the reader has access through
the firewall, that the site she is downloading from is listed in the "trusted
sites" section of the Internet Options. Still she gets the message that the
"page cannot be found." We have tried editing the registry as suggested in
the MS article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323308

Just to note, none of her colleagues are having this issue when downloading
the .pdf, all of them using Windows XP and the latest version Adobe.

However, the above mentioned MS article does not mention how to fix the
error on a machine with SP2. We tried adding the registry entries suggested
in the article without success. Does anyone know how we can obtain the
"hotfix" without being charged for a phone call to tech support? Or is there
yet another solution? This appears to be a rather common problem that neither
Microsoft nor Adobe wants to address seriously.

The only way to get the hotfix is to call MS, and there is no support call
charge, just the cost of the phone call itself, as long as you don't mention
anything else other than needing that particular hotfix.

I have an update and resolution to our problem. I do not know if it will help
anyone else, but just in case, I am posting it here. After doing everything I
could think of, I decided to go back into the "Internet Options," once again
cleared out the temporary files folder, went to the Security tab where we had
the "Internet" settings on "Low." I then reset them to the original default
of "medium." On the Advanced tab I clicked on the "Retore Advanced Settings"
button, clicked apply, then ok, shut down the browser, restarted it, went to
the https://ssl.* site where the .pdf files are housed, and Voila! The file
downloaded. We had been in contact with the developers and IT personnel at
the site and no one can figure out why this little change of mine is working,
but it is. Good luck!

Regards,
Lon
