Problems displaying pages with SHTML designation.

R

Ron Ritch

This is a recent problem perhaps associated with SP2.

Using IE to access SHTML designated pages stored on my
computer doesn't work. I get nothing. Additionally the
icon displayed to signify the association is not the IE
one.

SHTML pages are used to tell the server to add a server-
side include file to the file before it is sent.

When I use IE to access an SHTML file on a server it
works fine, it is something wrong only when I read the
file on my computer.

I can switch the preferences to Mozilla or to a text
editor and it works. It used to work with IE. Any
suggestions are appreciated.

Ron,

Open Registry Editor and post the contents of this key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.shtml

I am encountering this same problem on both my desktop Compaq PC running
Windows XP with SP2 and
my laptop Toshiba also with Windows XP SP2. I have had the problem on my
desktop PC for some time
and checked on the laptop to see if it also had the problem.
I double-clicked on SSItest.shtml on the laptop and Internet Explorer
displayed the file as expected.
It did not display the text of the "include" file, but that is normal. The
content would only show up
if the file is on the web. So, my laptop was working correctly. I then

Clicked on "My Computer" and navigated to the local directory containing my
file: SSItest.shtml.
I right-clicked on the file
Moused down to "Open with"
Clicked "Choose Program"
Selected "Netscape"
Checked "Always use the selected program to open this file"
Clicked "OK"

and Netscape opened SSItest.shtml and displayed it correctly.
I repeated the process substituting "Internet Explorer" for "Netscape", but
IE would not now open
the file as it did before. Double-clicking on SSItest.shtml did nothing.
Repeating the process above
and selecting Netscape resulted in Netscape opening the file as expected.
Repeating the process again and
selecting Internet Explorer resulted in the file not being displayed.

Using Regedit, I found the string
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.shtml
and the results were:
Default REG_SZ (value not set)
on the laptop.

Suggestions?

I have the same problem as ROn only I'm running Win XP with SP1. The strange
thing is 2 pc's and 1 laptop on my network are able to open web pages with
shtml designations. One of the PCs as >net framework installed the oters do
not. I've looked in the registry and can not find anything different from the
PC's that cannot display the web page.
