I removed the backdoor rustock b virus from my computer and now when I boot
the computer up it goes to the destop picture with none of the desktop on
it. No start menu, taskbar, icons, sys tray or clock. It would seem some
of the start-up programs do start up but others do not. I am able to lauch
most functions threw the task manager and running explorer.exe. How can I
get my computer back to normal. I am running XP Home with service pack 2

If that does not work, while staring at your background, hit ctrl+alt
+del. That will bring up taskmanager. Grab your OS cd and pop it in.
From there select File... New Task (Run...), and type in:
sfc /scannow
That will fix all your system files, and will most likely fix your
problem. (If it doesn't, from that Run... menu, try typing in
explorer.exe for a temporary fix.)

thanks, I will try that tonight

solutions fixed the problem.

programs?

<snip>

Yes, a repair install aka in place upgrade. But give some thought to this.
A system that was compromised, how do you know it's clean? Sometimes the
best option is to do a clean install. That said here is a link with info on
doing a repair install which should retain applications and data. But as
things can go, always have a full and complete backup just in case.

It depends on what you mean by "reinstall windows."

Basically the answer is no. When you reinstall Windows, you lose
everything--programs included. However there is the option of something
called a "repair installation," which doesn't cause the loss of everything.
Personally I don't consider a repair installation a real installation, and I
don't like that name because I think it confuses people. I wish they just
called it a "repair" (which I think is a much more accurate name) than a
"repair installation."

I came to this thread late, and don't know what your problems are. Whether a
repair installation might help you, I don't know, but there's usually no
disadvantage of at least trying it before you try a real installation.
