Windows XP SP2 Explorer.exe Locks Up

Hello,

I have recently purchased a copy of windows xp professional.
Everything went find until I upgraded my service pack to SP 2. After
restarting, my computer looked like it was loading. Coming back 15
minutes later, no tray icons were loaded. I hovered over the taskbar
and I had the wait icon on my mouse. I used Ctrl+Alt+Del and rebooted
my computer. While attempting to reboot, my computer had a "Ending
Program.. Explorer.exe" window. After reboot, my computer still wasn't
working. I opened Task Manager again and ended the explorer.exe
process. Using the "New Task..." button, I opened explorer.exe again.
Everything was working. However, every time I start my computer, I
must do this. Please help soon.

Thanks

How did you install SP2 - through windows update or from a CD? Did you
install it right away or did you use the system for some time, and install
other apps in between?

For SP2 to install successfully the system must be running well with no
problems and no malware. This is critical. How do you check to make sure
the system is clean of malware?

You could consider creating an installation CD that has SP2 added to it, in
a process called slipstreaming. Here are some links for how to do that.
Autostreamer makes it easier. Create the slipstreamed installation CD then
start over with a clean install.

In lieu of that you here are some other options. First some links for

Here are two links with info on how to remove SP2. You might want to do
that, clean the system and reinstall SP2.

If SP2 was installed from windows update, either get the CD or download the
full version and burn that to CD. Maybe you can find someone who has the
SP2 CD. They were all over the place when SP2 came out.

Did you install SP2 by windows update or from a CD? I would have been
better to install SP2 first. Did you try any of the suggestions I gave?

I am sure my computer is spyware/malware free because I have used this
software many times on my other computers, and just to check, I
scanned my computer with:

Spyware Doctor
Ad-Aware Personal SE
Spy-Sweeper (with Anti-Virus)

I am going to wipe out my computer, install XP, and then immediately
upgrade to SP 2.

Thanks for all of your advice

I immediately upgraded to SP 2, and the computer worked. I repeatedly
restarted my computer to make sure, and it behaved the same every
time.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and help!

I'm having the same exact problem. Unlike James, i really would love to NOT
reinstall my Win XP. Any idea if simply removing malware (not sure if i have
it) will help?

Thank you in advance!
