Problems after installing Xp patch - continuous rebooting

I was prompted today by the auto update tool to install the sp3 patch on my
IBM netvista pc running Xp - home edition ,, after installing my system
continues to reboot itself .. Would appreciate any help !!! thanks

Shutdown computer,on restart enter BIOS,install xp cd,select to have cdrom
with xp as 1st boot priority device,then exit BIOS,boot to xp
cd,recovery,press
enter for password,then type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru type:EXIT Let
xp start-up,remove cd.At some point reopen BIOS,select C: as 1st priority.

You mean SP-2 since there is no such thing as Windows XP SP-3?

the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup program is not completed
successfully:

Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select "Last known good configuration" at the menu.
If that fails, reboot tapping F8 again this time choosing Safe Mode.
Then System Restore to Date/Time before issue started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
