problem XP update for win2000 GPO

B

bruce

I followed the steps in Q307900 to update our win2000 GPO with the XP
extensions. I selected the Default Domain policy. Everything seemed to go
OK, but from the XP workstation, I don't see any of the settings that were
in the GPO. From my win2k DC, I don't see any of the additional XP settings
(keys or values). It's almost like nothing really happened. Any help
appreciated. TIA.

You either need to import the Windows XP/2003 ADM templates to your 2000
GPOs while editing from a 2000 computer. Or, you can just administer your
2000 GPOs from an XP box, which will update the ADM templates by default.

That's my problem. I followed Q307900, I'm on the XP box, I've selected my
Default Domain GPO, but all the settings are "Not Defined". Nothing we've
configured is showing up. I don't want to start making changes & have
everything overwritten.

where could I find the xp/2003 ADM templates - simply copy system.adm from
\windows\inf?

Bruce,

Ok, that is a bit of a different problem. The problem here is with the SP
version of the ADM templates. You need to get the ADM templates from a
system that has not had the SP installed. This should be in your $uninstall$
directory for the SP. copy those back to the INF directory and you should be
in business. You might want to also copy them to the XP box, so there is not
a mismatch in dates, which could cause the same problem to occur.

what SP are you referring to - SP4 on win2k?

I think my typo may have thrown you off, I meant to say Not Configured
instead of Not Defined. sorry.

On the 2000 server, the GPO settings are all there exactly as if I had
never updated the GPO from XP (ie, there is no Remote Assistance key,
etc).

On the XP box, all the settings have a value of Not Configured instead of
what I can see from the 2000 server.

I expected to see all my old settings for the Default Domain GPO on my XP
box & be able edit the new XP-specific settings as well. How can I
accomplish this?

I hope this is clear.

You need to get the ADM templates from a 2003 or XP box onto the 2000
server.
