Problem with XP + SP2 - Just 3 days BACK.

Prabhat

Hi ALL,

My System Configuration:

AMD Athlon 2500+

MSI K7N2 Delta Motherboard with nVIDIA nForce 2 Chipset

80 GB 7200 RPM HDD

256 MB DDR RAM - 300 FSB

MSI nVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 - 8X AGP Display

CD-ROM and CD-W

I use Zone Alarm Firewall. Which is Correctly configured.

Earlier I was using Windows XP Prof. Then I have Upgraded to SP1. My system
was working fine. Then I have installed the SP2 (Network Install file). Then
also My system was working fine with out any problem or Slowdown.

But now it is Taking Longer to Boot and Display the Logon Screen since last
3 days.

Then I have Defragmented my HDD, Looked for any Spyware or Scan for any
Virus. But all that did not Helped.

So after all tries, I have performed a Clean Install of Windows XP with SP2
Slipstreamed in the XP Installation CD. But that also did not helped. Now
also it is taking the same time it was taking before I perform clean
Install.

I have checked the Drivers. I think all drivers are installed correctly.

Please Help to get rid of this. Or suggest shall I move back to SP1 again.
(But My PC was working fine with SP2 before 3 days.)

Thanks

Prabhat

Think about what programs / updates you may have installed 3 days ago.
System Restore Restore points may provide some clues.

Have a look in Administrative Tools > Event Viewer for events around the
start of the trouble / clues to the current
problem

Hi Jon,

Thanks for reply.
But I have Performed a Clean Install of Windows XP + SP2 Slipstreamed, With
out any other Software. But Still The Same problem.

The Problem Started when I was copying Some Data from one CD-ROM to my PC.
It was getting Stuck several times during the process. So I have ejected the
CD Drive. Then onward the Problem Started. But I don't think that was the
Prob. But I have found The System Slow after that Onward.

But Even If that wa the Prob, So that should not persist after a Clean
Install.

Thanks

Hi Jon,

I have run the chkdsk and MS Disk Defragmentor also.

No Help. Earler it was taking around 45 to 55 Sec. or MAx 1 min. to Display
the Login BOX. Now It is taking around 1 Min and 30 Sec. to Display the
Login BOX.

I have read some article similar problem in NET and found that He has solved
the problem using "TuneXP". The Link is
http://www.driverheaven.net/dforce/showdoc.php?doc=txp_about but that also
did not helped it seems. After Tune XP it took 1 Min and 40 Sec to display
Login Screen.

Thanks for any more suggestions.

Hi,

Check your startup folder and msconfig/startup and rid of unnecessary
programs not really needed during the boot process. Other than that, run
both these:

Windows XP Startup Programs Tracker
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_u.htm#xp_util

Bootvis is a Boot performance trace visualization tool for use with Windows
XP systems. It gives a graphical view of what processes are doing what and
when during boot and allow you to optimize your boot up. To download go to:

BootVis - Performance Trace Visualization Tool (Line 113)

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for reply.

Currently my Startup loads only: 1) NAV, 2) ZoneAlarm.

One Question: -
-----------------
What is being Loded or Processes that occurs Between the Windows XP Logo
(with BLUE Progress bar) and the Login Dialog to appear?
In my system after the Windows Logo disappear and before the Login Dialog
Display there is a Time GAP of 20-25 Secs. with Blank Screen (BLACK Screen).
Earler I used to get the Login Dialog immediately after the WindowsXP Logo
disappear.

I will check that Links TOO. As I have told earlier in my post that I have
already used "TuneXP".

Thanks

Hi,
Currently my Startup loads only: 1) NAV, 2) ZoneAlarm.

According to who and where, details please.

Those two could very well be the problem at hand. Try disabling both or
either/or and see if the boot time changes in any way. As for TuneXP, never
used it nor ever needed it.

As per your question, did you run Bootvis? Either way, this does at times
have to do with:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Shell should read: Explorer.exe

Other than that, I would need to see your startup log, per Doug's tool.
Feel free to send it to me via email. Good luck in the meantime.

Hi Kelly,

I will send you the details of ALL Startup Items (Log of the "Windows XP
Startup Programs Tracker")
Also I will send you the details of Bootvis later today. As now I am in
Office. Once I will go home then I will send all things to your email.

In windows 2000 the "BOOTLOG.TXT" file created in "C:\". But in XP Sytem
where does that file (or startup log) will be created? So That I will send
you that also.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Might also be worth considering disabling a few unnecessary services from
starting up - SP2 adds a few new ones (depending on your particular
configuration)

via Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Services you might consider disabling / setting to manual, rather than
automatic might include.....

Application Layer Gateway
Automatic Updates
Computer Browser
DNS Client
Ipsec
(NVidia Driver Helper Service)
Secondary Logon
Security Centre
Server
TCP / IP Netbios Helper
Webclient
Windows Firewall
Wireless Zero Configuration

Hi,

Go to Start/Run/Msconfig/Boot.ini and select /Bootlog. This switch turns on
boot logging to a file that is named systemroot\Ntbtlog.txt.

Haven't received anything as of yet from you, though. Will check again
after closing out from the groups.

Hi Kelly,

I have sent that files to your email: (e-mail address removed)
Please check and let me know if you have received or not?

Hi,

Today I have checked my Event LOG I found one Warning:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 9/30/2004
Time: 10:06:45 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: LIPU
Description:
Windows saved user LIPU\Administrator registry while an application or
service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used
by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be
unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try
configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or
NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

What Does that Mean?

Thanks

Hi Jon,

But what exactly the Problem which is Causing that Warning?

Did any service that is Stoped or Set to Manual is Making that Problem?

Thanks
Prabhat

J

Jon

The "readme.txt" file on the link I gave gives a good explanation of the
problem.

No don't think it's caused by disabling any services.

Seen that warning appear with fresh SP2 installations.

*Possibly* related to the svchost.exe group containing

DCom Server Process Launcher (DComLaunch)
Terminal Services (TermService)

not closing down properly on shutdown with SP2. Others are probably better
able to comment on that though. The UphClean service sorts it out well.

As regards your original problem, did you see any significant reduction in
boot up time after disabling / setting to manual the services I mentioned?
