Problem with XP SP2 Intergrated (streamlined) installation and Windows File Protection

Problem:
When you install Windows from a CD that has had a Service Pack streamlined
or, as it's called now, "integrated" into the installation files, when you
run Windows File Protection's DOS commands, such as "sfc /scannow" it
requests the original CD. Fine...
You insert the CD used to setup Windows but instead of accepting that disc,
it repeatedly requests that you "Insert your Windows XP Professional Service
Pack 2" CD.
I even tried using my (newly received) Windows XP Pro SP2 CD. No good.

I have personally experienced this myself with other service packs on other
version of Windows but in attempting to find an answer in newsgroups and
Google, I have never seen a 'solution'. I have seen other NG postings
seeking insight, but no wisdom has crossed my eyes.

Any help?

I was interested in what you said so I tried it out. After typing "sfc
/scannow" the process starts then asks for the XP CD I inserted the SP2
slipstreamed disk and the process continued.
Are you perhaps inserting the SP2 disk and not the slipstream disk.

Not Me

Don,
Marc Liron has a good article on his site which might help you fix the
problem. Mainly it concerns the fact that the .dll cache file in the
i386 File is apparently corrupted casing a constant call for the XP CD
during execution of the System File Checker [sfc /scannow] in order
replace needed .dll files. What I did was as he stated he did:
a. I copied the entire i386 from the XP (holygrammed) CD to the root of
the Boot Drive [usually C, in my particular case D] (my path is
D:\i386). I then changed registry keys to point to that path during
execution of the System File Checker. A very good article and I
recommend you read it: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html . To
me, slipstreaming is a much ballyhooed process which takes more time to
accomplish than you ever save on re-installing the OS. But: to each
his/her own thing.

Thanks for the pointers, everyone.

In my case, the soultion was to change the value in the "SourcePath" key in
my registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePathIt showed "I:" which is the drive letter that was in effect for my primaryCD-ROM drive during install. However, since install I have changed thedrive letter for several deviecs, including ssaid CD-ROM drive. Once Ichanged "I:" to "R:", SFC /SCANNOW worked fine.Apparently, SFC/WFP looks at the registry to see if the SourcePath matches, instead of actually LOOKING at the CD's contents to verify validity. Wow.That's pretty, um, lame, as far as I can see...Thanks,Don"Carey Frisch [MVP]" <[email protected]> wrote in messageWindows XP asks for wrong Installation CD> http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_20934518.html>> Introduction to using scannow sfc (system file checker)> http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html>> Prompted for CD-ROM When You Run System File Checker> While Correct CD-ROM Is in Drive> http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;263499>> --> Carey Frisch> Microsoft MVP> Windows XP - Shell/User>> Be Smart!
