Do I have the correct Windows XP SP2 Installation Disk?

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to create a Kaspersky Rescue Disk. One of the things required to
do this is a Windows XP Service Pack 2 installation CD. All I have to do is
to point Kaspersky to the location of this CD in my PC. The CD is in my E
drive, so Kaspersky is pointed to my E drive. Unfortunately, when I run the
Kaspersky wizard, I get a message saying "Cannot find Microsoft Windows XP
distributive". Does that mean the CD I have is the wrong one? It is clearly
marked "Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 with Advanced Security
Technologies". It is dated 2004 and carries Part No. X10-80291. I'm
thoroughly confused.

Can anyone help?

You've added drives to the OS but youre (cd E:) probably still has the
default letter in the registry (D:),& needs to be changed.Go to
run,type:regedit
In regedit,expand:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/microsoft/windows/setup/
open source path.Locate,InstallationSources,L.click,go to edit, modify, set the
letter to E: (same as listed in my computer),close,L.click on SourcePath,do
the
same,close out regedit when thru.

Yes, you have the wrong CD in the drive. The one you're using is the CD that
contains the files needed to update an XP installation to Service Pack 2. Note
how it says on the CD "This disk contains free updates for Windows XP". It was
probably ordered from Microsoft through this web site.

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Just to confirm that you're using the wrong CD, here's what it looks like.

Windows XP Service Pack 2

If you're going to create a rescue disk, you'll need to use an actual XP
installation CD. You need a CD that's capable of installing the operating
system, not just Service Pack 2.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. You're absolutely correct - the disk I have says "This
disk contains free updates for Windows XP" and it looks identical to the jpg
provided in your second link. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
