problem with XP ServicePac 3

After installing ServicePac 3, I found that a number of the links in emails
would not open, with a message, "file does not have a program associated with
it for performing this action. Create an association in folders option....."
However, I can't figure out how to do so since I don't know the file
extension of the link.
Any help would be appreciated.

If it is a link, it opens with your browser. Set that for the association.
Or is it an attachment?

If an attachment:

Save the attachment to your HDD. Right click on it and Open With | Choose
Program. Find and choose a program that works and then check the box: Always
use this program to open this kind of file. This should enable you to open
these attachments in the future.

If a .PPS attachment, and using Outlook Express, you will need this also.

Unable to open .PPS attachments directly from Outlook Express using XP/SP2
or XP/SP3:

Is it a link or a file attachment?

A link usually refers to some WWW page. A file would be something
like a .PDF or MS Word .DOC file, so if it is a file, what is the
nature of the file that has no association with a program?

If it is a file and you know what kind by the extension, open Windows
Explorer and find a similar file (or save your attachment someplace),
navigate to a file of the same type or the file you saved, right click
it, choose Open with..., and then Choose Program (no not choose the
appropriate program from those offered), find the appropriate program
and check the box to Always use this program and click OK.

Thanks for the response.
They are links to web pages. How do I set up an association for a web page
link. Do I have to set one up for each web page that does not open? There are
many.

What browser are you using, and what e-mail client. (i.e. Internet Explorer
Version X and Outlook Express, etc.?).

You will want to make sure your browser is set as the default. For Internet
Explorer:

Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults |
Custom + Down Arrow | Choose a default Web browser. Select the radio button
for Internet Explorer.

Do you use Web-based e-mail or an actual e-mail program? (And if the
latter, which one?)

Sometimes Web links are to specific files (like PDFs). Can you post one
of those links here?
