Problem with Windows XP Home edition

I have an HP Pavilion a475c Desktop with 1 g memory. I started having
problems with startup taking 10 to 15 minutes, with a long shutdown. I
started reading on this news group about malware and some other ways to
try to improve startup. I rans my Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Ware SE
and other spyware programs. I did a full scan with my Internet security
suite Trend Micro.

Then I used one registry cleaner then it improved, but the next day it
would revert to the same startup time. I just assumed it was a way of
life. I also have MusicMatch lifetime subscription, which Yahoo Music
apparently bought. It kept asking me to update to Yahoo music, which I
tried, but it flaked out in the middle and ever since many of my
programs paths quick working. I reinstalled most of the programs
including my Logitech mouseware, but a couple won't run or go back to
other settings.

I have the OEM Windwos XP Home HP recovery discs (which I made) and a
recovery partition, can I repair the Windows portion without destroying
all my OE settings and other data?

Thanks
Terry

No, you can't.

If this was my machine then I would do this:
1. Back up all important files.
2. Back up all EMail.
3. Restore some sample files so that you know that you can do it.
4. Rename the folder where your OE files reside, then restore
it from your backup. Does OE still work?
5. Make a note of your OE settings.
6. Restore the machine to factory condition.
7. Install and maintain a good virus scanner.
8. Stay clear of registry cleaners. Most don't do anything
useful; some damage your machine.
9. Be more selective about the sites you visit and the programs
you download.

Thanks, I had started doing that, but was hoping I wouldn't have to do
the recovery to factory condition.

Have you tried a system restore at a date prior to your problem?
Yes, most of the old restore points disappeared when used the Registry
Cleaners. I am preparing to do the complete system install.

moving all important files to my external drive and reading up on making
the OE complete backup.

Thanks again
