problem with win XP formating the harddrive

I have recently tried to install windows XP on a computer
and after i format the harddrive i recieve this message
"Setup was unable to format the partition. the disk may be
damaged.
Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected
to your computer. If the disk is a scsi disk, make sure
your scsi devices are properly terminated. Consult your
computer manual or scsi adapter documentation for more
information.
You must select a different partition for windows XP"
I do not have any scsi devices installed and i have tried
changing the partition between FAT32 and NTFS.

I got the very same message when trying to format the
NTFS file system on a Dell laptop. I believe this may be
caused by damaged low level formatting, (which is done at
the hard drive factory), and concerns the Volume Bitmap.
The solution is to have a computer repair shop do a low
level format, or buy a new hard drive for it. I did remove
the laptop drive, and connect it to my desktop PC as a
slave drive, and it did complete the NTFS formatting then.
Email me for helpful info; (e-mail address removed)

But, did you read the first line of the message:

"Setup was unable to format the partition. the disk may be
damaged.
