Problem with USB 2.0 External drives

Hi,
I have a laptop with the Buslink PC card adapter for USB 2.0. I am running successfully
the Plextor DVD burner externally on the USB 2.0 port.

However, I have a number of USB 2.0 external cases(different brands) that work some times
but not other times. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the hardware a number of times.
Checking the device manager I see that one USB mass storage unit is not working right.

I am using SP2.

Any suggestions for this problem?

Are there any error messages displayed? "Doesn't work" don't work when it
comes to asking for assistance!

A thought distilled from similar earlier postings - is the mass storage
device separately powered, or does it take power from USB? (And, how many
unpowered USB devices are plugged in at the same time, active or not, they
still use power).

Could be the laptop USB power supply is insufficient for the total demand
being made on it.

REMEMBER that both USB and FIREWIRE are live connections only. That simply
means that if the external device has a power switch, Windows will only
recognize the device(s) when the power switch is turned to on.
