problem with trojans and pop ups

I'm using Windows XP home addition. Since this afternoon, pop ups have been
coming up without a browser open. Thinking a virus was doing its deed, I used
a virus scanner. It came up with many trojans and other random viruses. After
the scan was complete, and the computer restarted, a black screen poped up
and bopped around the screen for a while, limiting anything I was doing.
After it stopped, the pop ups began again. And after doing a second scan, it
came up with more trojans, one of which I've seen on the first scan. I'm
afriad of what this will do to my computer. Is there anyway I can fix this on
my own or do I need to take it in?

Most situations like this might take you several...days to get rid of
all those nasty trorjans, viruses, spywares, etc. and also require you to
use more than one virus scanners.

Because antivirus software is not a spyware-effective scanner. You have
to make use of all available tools and use them several times until
there is no infection detected.

Below is several things you can use now :

-Install a Firewall to limit the number of further infections from
getting into your computer because most of such things often create a
backdoor for their fellows to get in. In addition, a firewall also
prevent the current infections from sending your private information to
the outside world ( the one who manipulates the viruses ).

Use Ad-aware antispyware from Lavasoft. It is perhaps the most popular
antispyware at the moment and it is free. Remember to update the
definition first :

Another good free antispyware app is SpybotS&D. As I mentioned earlier,
one is not enough, the more the..merrier ^ ^.Update it first as well

One more thing, use them frequently and in turn. Until you get no
critical infections. If these tools cannot get rid of those nasty
popups and trojans, come back and ask others for help. Goodluck

1. Download hijackthis from http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
2. Install hijackthis on your C: drive.
3. Open the program and click on Do a system scan and save a logfile.
4. Save the logfile.
5. Visit http://www.hijackthis.de/
6. Either copy and paste your logfile contents into the space provided, or
7. Click on the Browse button and locate your logfile.
8. Click on Analyze
9. Wait a few minutes and the results will be displayed.
10. Follow the instructions for the "Nasty" entries.

Good luck.

Which virus scanner did you use? Program names are often helpful
because there is a wide variation in quality and performance between
the different antivirus programs that are available. Some of them are
actually fraudulent.

And some names of the actual viruses or trojans that you have
encountered might also be helpful, as there are some of these that
require highly specialized tools to get rid of them.

Here are some free online scanning sites where you can get your
computer checked out for a "second opinion".
Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

Good luck

Follow the advice given so far and see if you can't clean it yourself.
If after all that they still keep coming back don't beat yourself up.
You might have a real hard time killing the virus on your PC without
outside help. I don't mean a tech, I mean another PC.

When a customer brings in a PC with viruses the first thing I do it
pull the hard drive out of it. I then connect it to another clean PC
that has a good antivirus program with the latest updates and use that
PC to clean the infected drive. This way your Windows never gets a
chance to load and the viruses never get a chace to load their
defenses.

In most cases the PC is clean after a single pass and I can install an
AV program on it for the customer and update it to help prevent future
infection. While the scan may take a while, the actual time I spend
with the PC is not long so we would charge for 1/2 hour labor.

In some cases the virus infects important Windows files. Once the
virus is removed Windows may not boot, or may act up in some other way.
At that time I recommend simply backing up your important files and
reloading Windows.

I agree. Tho as an aside, yes, many anti-virus firms have indeed
included anti-spyware into their utilities. But still, one still need to
run the separate anti-malware apps.
