Problem with the internet

Hi there,

I'm having real problems with my wireless network at home. There are 3
computer connected to it, and although the other two computers have problems
now and again, i seem to lose my connection several times a day. Some times
it just keeps connecting then disappearing, much to my frustration as you can
imagine.

There are 2 pc's and a laptop connected to the wireless network, our isp is
Virgin, we are using the modem virgin provided, model number E08C007. The
wireless router is a Buffalo WHR-G54S and we have all set up static IP
addresses, although even unassigned IP's seem to yield the same results.

The main issue is just that mine seems to be the only pc that has any major
difficulty. It slows down and speeds up at different times, but i seem to be
unable to connect several times a day, and there doesn't seem to be any
pattern to it.

Any help or advice you could offer would be very welcome.

Thank you,

~Phil

Just a thought:
The fact the 2 out of 3 machines work is a bit of a diagnostic. With
wireless as with wired, the part between the pc and router can be a
factor. Bad wires and jacks make wired networks fail, so can a brick
wall, 1000 feet of air, other equipment, etc. So think about what is
different about pc1 pc2 and pc3. All this and of course the wireless
card in the effected pc too.

I'm also making the rash generalization here that the PC works and is
not a bogus driver or overburdened OS, virus or such.

I have encountered this befoe. You need to check and update every "wireless
adapter" drivers on each of the wireless access PCs. Also this type of
problem happened to me. My USB ports that I was using for my USB wireless
adapters were the cause of this problems.

Also, with any wireless routers, it is always "good practice" to have one PC
"wired" into the router. This is to monitor, configure and test the wireless
network problems like you describe. The PC does not have to always connected
by the wire.

Does your software show any other wireless connections in adjoining
properties. If yes changing the frequency, possible with some routers,
might help.

Another source of problems can be electo-magnetic fields. Encountered
that problem in an office on an industrial estate. Realised that the
interference stopped at lunchtime when a large noisy machine was
switched off.

Another solution might be an ethernet connection for the computer
affected.

Hope this helps.

Cheers for the help. As far as im aware my pc is clean and all drivers are
up to date, i try to keep my pc in a decent working order. How can i find
out if my OS is over burdened?

My pc is closer to the router than another pc that works fine, with less air
and walls in between. My wireless card is also newer and my IP address in a
higher order than the other two computers.

Any other ideas, they are all welcome and appreciated.

As much as its a bitch, this can be a fun problem.... Okay, I'm on
drugs.. still:
Another idea is: I found my router had WPA2 security and some form of
combined encryption for this WPA2. But my speed was horrible. I have
a 5mb line and only got 1.8mb on the router. I later found out the
encryption on WPA2 was AES+??? not sure what the other thing was but
changing it to just AES worked.
Here all along I thought the combined encryption would be better for me.
