problem with startup

I am a new user. Suddenly, after re-start I do not
receive the startup screen. I get the WINDOWS XP Home
Edition screen, then a screen: Click On User, choices
being my name, or Administrator. If I click either
choice, a window opens with the cmd.exe heading, and I
see the cursor flashing after C:\Documents and
Settings\(Admministrator). What should I do now? Thank
you very much.

I am not quit sure what you are saying, you boot up the
Windows logo screen comes up then it asks that you choose
a user to signin, your choices are your name or admin.
after you choose either or just 1 peticular signon?
Then after signing on you get a DOS prompt (CMD.EXE) and
the directory showing is: C:\Documents and
Settings\(Admministrator), sounds like cmd.exe or cmd in
in the startup folder, **try this click start/programs/
then startup, if cmd or cmd.exe is in there place the
cursor on this file single right click it then delete. Now
do this, click start/run type in cmd then hit enter, if
the box opens then you are OK, type in EXIT and hit enter
and the window will close, the reason for this was to make
sure that you did not delete the actual file cmd.exe or
you would have future problems, Now if it does not open
and gives an error, then you will have to open the
recycling bin find the cmd or cmd.exe file place your
curser over it right click it then left click restore, it
will place it back in the startup folder, you are going to
have to do the following go back to the ** and instead of
delete left click cut, then open explorer find
c:\windows\system32 directory, on the left, place your
cursor on the system32 directory single right click it
then left click past, it should not ask to replace the
file.

Good Luck

Type "exit" (w/o quotation marks) at prompt and see if it takes you to
windows or reboots.
