Problem with startup

One day when I started my computer it booted up until you saw the windows
screen and then it shut down again and started to boot once again. This would
continue until you actually turned of the computer. I tried to restore to an
earlier date, but nothing helped. I had to empty the computer compleetly and
reinstall everything. Does anyone have any idea what would have caused this
