Problem with SP2 upgrade

I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP1. Yesterday, I got a message (popup)
which said that "Microsoft will stop support for SP1 from 10-October-2006"
and prompted me to download/install SP2. Is this a valid message or some
spyware/adware. Unfortunately I followed the link and it appears that SP2 has
got installed, but my system is completely messed up. Takes ages to start up
and hangs randomly

I tried to repair using my XP SP1 CD but problem persists. I am now getting
another message prompting to go to www.regpro32.com.

Need help desperately.

It is correct that support for XP SP1 systems will end on that date. The
message prompting you to go to a malware site indicates that your
computer was not clean and therefore was not ready to have SP2
installed.

You can try uninstalling SP2 and cleaning up your machine, but a better
course of action might be for you to take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA). You know
your skill level best.

Here are links to help you uninstall SP2, clean up your computer,
prepare properly for SP2, and install it.

Thanks for the help. I could uninstall SP2 successfully. But, now my computer
takes ages to start up and shut down. Sometimes, it hangs just before the
Starting Windows screen.

Any help welcome.

I already told you what I thought you should do. Clean up the computer
and try and reinstall SP2 after properly preparing it. If the machine
is too b0rked because you originally installed SP2 on a malware-ridden
machine, back up your data and clean-install Windows. Install drivers,
do any OEM pre-SP2 prep, install SP2 - only now can you connect to the
Internet with the Windows Firewall in place - do all subsequent Windows
Updates. Install programs from installation media, restore data from
backups.

Hi:
If it's not too late, first pull any DSL or Cable connections off
before you start the computer. Then try Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Pick an earlier day when
your computer was fine. See if that works.
