Problem with RTF file after installing patches to IE6 Service Pack 1

I have a problem in IE6 that only occurs after I install the 6 patches which
are required after IE6 Service Pack 1.

I am unable to access the Rich Text Format version of a file on my web site
http://www.gerardvignes.com/

The particular file I cannot access (after the patches) is
http://www.gerardvignes.com/resume/GerardMarshallVignes.rtf

The error I receive is: Internet Explorer cannot download
GerardMarshallVignes.rtf from www.gerardvignes.com. Internet explorer was
not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either
unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

I can access this file using reinstalled IE6 Service Pack 1, but once I
install the 6 patches (which are required after you reinstall IE6 Service
Pack 1), I can no longer access the file.

This problem seems to have appeared since 07/02/2004, when I last updated
and checked the resume.

Is it possible that there are problems in one of the 6 patches required
after IE6 Service Pack 1 is installed?

More Details:

I can access this file using Netscape 7.1, Mozilla 1.7, Opera 7.5 and
Firefox 0.9.

I can also access the other versions of my resume with all browsers (Word,
PDF and TXT).

The specific version of IE6 SP1 I am running is 6.0.2800.1106, 128-bit,
product id 55736-364-3156553-04150, update versions SP1; Q837009; Q832894;
Q831167;

I am running W2K Workstation with SP4 and all patches, 5.00.2195.

I am running Office XP with SP3.

The RTF file was created using Word 2002 SP3.

The server is Linux/Apache (operate by WebIntellects.com).

I am hiding behind several firewalls and antivirus software, but they are
properly configured.

I did test this on my local machine using my web site source files. The
error does not occur.

I did also re-uploading the files index.html and
resume/GerardMarshallVignes.rtf (in case of corruption), but the error
continues to occur.

I also tested on several other sites having RTF documents, one in particular
being http://www.metrokc.gov/ohrm/jobs/pdfs/JobAppInstructions.rtf which
works fine.

I have been experimenting with this problem, and I discovered something
interesting.

My RTF file, which does not work, returns a mime type of txt\rtf

The King County RTF file, which does work, returns a mime type of
application\rtf.

I noticed that the other files that work (on my site and the King County
site) all agree on the mime types: application\msword and application\pdf.

Could it be that one of the latest IE patches requires that IE now require a
mime type of application\rtf?

Is this for security reasons?

Oops!

Make that text/rtf and application/rtf.

I have done a bit more research, and it looks like both mime types are valid
for RTF files.

My web host chooses to return text/rtf, which appears to no longer work with
IE 6 Service Pack 1 once the latest patches are installed.

Is it possible to run malicious scripts via Rich Text File documents?

My web host webintellects.com is really on the ball.

This has been setup for you.
All I did was add: AddType application/rtf .rtf to the bottom of your
/.htaccess file.
