Problem with restoring ntbackup system state

G

Guest

I'm trying to restore a full ntbackup onto a new system without much success.
I have a full ntbackup image including system state. After doing a full
resore the system will crash on boot with a blue screen and then reboot (too
fast to see what the error message is).

I've also tried just restoring data but I'm running into two problems - the
restored directories are not accessible because of invalid security IDs, and
most programs don't work because the registry and needed dll's are not
properly configured.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

The programs have to be reinstalled from the original installation media in
order to create the needed registry entries. You cannot simply run the old
programs from the new installation. Only by installing are needed files
placed in the system folder, as well as the needed registry entries.

On the other matter or the SID's, you need to take ownership of the
files/folders. Right-click the folder, select properties. Go to the security
tab and click advanced. You can take control of the folders on the owner
tab. For the security tab to appear in a WinXP Pro system, you must disable
simple file sharing in the control panel/folder options/view tab. For a
WinXP Home system, you must restart in safe mode and logon as administrator.

An additional note for WinXP Pro users: This procedure will not help you
recover data if the files are encrypted. All you will be able to do is
delete them. To recover encrypted files you will need the original
encryption certificate or a Recovery Agent from the installation under which
they were encrypted. Without one of these, the files are not recoverable.

You should restore a full system backup only to the same kind of
hardware. Apparently your new system is different, and the old drivers
do not fit. Install the OS first and then restore your data only.
