Hardware agnostic ntbackup/restore. How?

can you point me to anything which discusses using ntbackup restore in a
hardware independent way?

The problem being that one has used ntbackup to backup an XP PC's drives and
system state, to, say, a CD. The PC is then fried and replaced by a new
machine with different hardware.

I am looking for the best way in which to restore to the new hardware
without messing up the drivers.

Restoring the system state to new hardware with any backup method is always
a problem. The general steps go like this for NTBackup.

1) Install XP to the same service pack level as the backup.
2) Restore the backup - don't reboot into Windows.
3) Perform repair install.

NTBackup is not compatible with backing up to CD's unless you use third
party drivers like Firestreamer. If this is the case follow their
instructions to do the restore then perform the repair install. The key is
to not boot into Windows after doing the restore. You have to boot from the
Windows CD and do the repair install first. Make sure you have a XP CD
slipstreamed to the same service pack level as the current system before you
start.
