Just a couple more questions.

Setting here reading all these post I thought "What about rolling
system back to a restore point before I started having all this
trouble". Would that work? Then let update install the updates as if
they were never installed before.

I don't think rolling back the system will work, unless you can roll back to
a time before you installed the .Net frameworks. It is unlikley you a have
restore point that far back.
Plus a question I asked that never got answered was where on my system
are the updates stored when DLed before installed? Since Windows
updates says the updates are DLed waiting to be installed I thought
maybe deleted the DLed one in case there is something wrong with them
and re-DLing them again.

Just a couple thoughts. Opinions please.

Remember what the Fixit does .. it deletes all of the downloads that are not
yet installed ..
If you are curious: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\
Delete everything in there if you like .. it should do no harm .. (at least
one file can't be deleted as it will be in use)

Thanks for reply. Was just wondering.

Yes. Yes.

But you will be reinstalling everyone of them if you do things correctly
anyway - not just uninstalling to uninstall.

I don't think it is necessary to remove the hotfixes .. how would you know
which ones are related to .Net? well of course it is information that is
available somewhere .. but I just don't think it is necessary ...

Here's the info I posted on alt.hardware where someone else has the exact
same problems:

[[ Delete all your .NET frameworks in Add-Remove Programs .. don't bother
with
the updates .. so ~don't~ choose to select show updates.

Click on the links here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982
to download .NET frameworks
Install them in the order indicated.
then reboot
then check for updates ]]

This ~has gotta~ work ;)

By running the 'fixit' here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 those downloaded
files are deleted and the update procedure is reset.
You can do it manually, but there is a problem, as first
you need to 'stop' the related update service on your
computer, that is what the 'fixit' does automatically.

If it is not working, the next thing to try would be: run
the fixit, then open 'Task Manager' (right click task bar,
choose 'task manager') Now go through the processes list,
selecting and stopping 'end process' on many processes,
Hopefully you will stop a process that is causing a problem
with your windows updates. (I recently found that an HP
update process was causing a problem). When you have done that go to:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ Choose to 'Get
high-priority updates ' with the Express button.

Excellent point and something I'd forgotten about. In my case it was a
javaw.exe in the HP folders causing the problem/s. It took a complete
removal, including the registry, and then a reinstall of the HP drivers and
Toolbox to get it taken care of. After insisting many times that it was not
an HP issue, they finally admitted they HAD heard of the problem. However,
it has never been fixed and AFAIK they never acknowledged it online or
anywhere else. I've forgotten now what it was inter-acting with. Both
instances I came across were with the "n" version of the HP Laserjet Color
Printers; 2550n and 2510n IIRC but don't quote me on that.
N O T E : There are several "javaw.exe" files spread around most
computers wth different purposes and different sizes. So replacing the
current javaw with one of those is unlikely to help the situation and likely
to make other things fail.

Any error messages? does windows update indicate a failed
update?
Did you try stopping many processes in task manager before
visiting windows update?
If you did not, then once again, clear up the downloaded
updates using the 'fixit' before trying again.

And momentarily you might try killing your AV too, but only long enough for
the download. Or download those updates to your computer from the MS ste so
turning off AV won't hurt anything as long as you're disconnected from the
net. If you're behiind a NAT router, it's probably OK to momentarily turn
off the AV for a short period of time; it's always a crapshoot - thus,
downloading an dinstalling them from disk is a safer way to do it.

I have hit a wall - I am unable to remove any of the Microsoft .net
framework files. I have tried to run Fixit 50202 and get an installer
error (error code 2738)I then tried Add/Remove to remove the files
without success ( the uninstaller just hangs): I tried Revo without
success (it tells me the uninstall was successful but the files are
still there both on Revo and in Add/Remove).
I have tried to run the dotnetfix_cleanup_tool and get a command line
option systax error. So no luck there!

I am left with a windows update nag telling me to install the two
updates that will not install, viz, KB979909 and KB979906.

Can someone please assist - I have tried everything suggested in this
thread.

Maybe your antivirus, or some other running program is preventing the
dotnetfix_cleanup from running correctly.

I would go through my running processes in 'task manager' and go on a
killing spree. .. but that's me.. you might prefer to temporarily stop your
antivirus' resident shield using the anti-virus' user interface. Other
programs can be stopped at start-up by using msconfig

A poster on another group with similar problems to yours was advised to
contact Microsoft (free support for security updates) by clicking 'Get Help
Now' top right hand side here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979909/en-us..
They communicated with a MS support person via email .. or instant messaging
and received the advice to run the dotnetfix_cleanup tool . that worked for
that poster. but your advice will be different, or extended at least.
