Problem with Physical memory on XP OS

Dave Rees

I have noticed that the computer is running generally
slower over the past few weeks, and i thought nothing of
it. Im running XP home on a 1.8Ghz Pentium 4, with 512Mb
Ram. But when i bring up the system information screen it
reads the following;

Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 162.17 MB

Now that dpes not seem right to me, as it only has very
little of the total physical memory avaliable to use. It
advised me to check my "Page file size" not that i
understand what that is, but this is what it said;

Page File Space 1.22 GB

Here is the virtual memory as well, if it will help;

Total Virtual Memory 1.72 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.07 GB

These reading were taking straight after a startup, so
minimal programs were running.

If anyone can provide any information that will help me
to sort out this problem with the lack of RAM, as it is
really starting to irritate me now.

Thanks

Dave Rees

I don't see any problem with your ram.
Windows will use sometimes over 200+ megs if it is available.

Your info is similar to mine and I have no problems. You
may need to defrag the HD and get Ad-aware 6 or SpyBot
S&D, SpywareBlaster or all and clear out the junk eating
up your resources.

Ok correct me if im wrong, my knowledge is not brillaint
when it comes to computers. I thought RAM was what
allowed windows to run multiple programs at once,
therefore more RAM means faster running of programs etc.

The reason i thought something was wrong with the RAM was
because it only has a small percentage of the total
amount avaliable to use. Is this normal then?

If so please can you suggest any other reasons why my
computer could be running slower than normal, when there
is plenty of HD space free and no other know issues.

Many Thanks

When Windows needs more ram to run a program it will dump
old datd in your ram and replace it.Also for the amount
of ram that you have 512mb your page file looks right
