I am experiencing two problems at present one with explorer and one
with Outlook Express V6. I am running Windows XP Home on this machine.
I have all the latest Microsoft Updates loaded. The problems could be
related as they are very similar.

1. Whenever I am downloading headers from several newsgroup I read my
Outlook Express gives the following error for application msimsn.exe
'The instruction at "0x70a96ca6" referenced memory at "0x00000002".
The memory would not be read.'

2. When I am working with graphic files in Explorer I frequently get
the following error for application explorer.exe 'The instruction at
"0x291040ad" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory would not
be read.'

I remember reading something about this problem a while back (can't
find reference again) and I think it was related to one of Microsoft's
Updates.

When I say it affects explorer - that is both Windows Explorer and
Internet Explorer.

I have searched Internet and Microsoft sites for information / fix on
above but with no success so far. Any assistance in fixing my problem
would be appreciated. I can work around these minor glitches but they
are annoying.

The problem is definitely caused by a Microsoft security update as I
reinstalled IE and OE from scratch. Everything was OK and then I went
to windows update and reinstalled the critical security updates and
problem came back. I need to know which patch so I can uninstall it -
does anyone know?

To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be disabled
and all other running processes closed before going to Windows Update and
when downloading/installing from any MS page. Were they?

Check your system for "hijackware":

CoolWebSearch Chronicles & CWShredder

Run in this order:

1. CWShredder (fix all)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all)

3. Spybot (generally, fix all in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.mvps.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
