Problem with My Documents folder

When I open My Documents the only things that appear are
the icons of the documents it contains. The lleft side
of the page which would allow me to manage the icons does
not appear. How do I fix this prooblem?
 
In My Documents, click the Tools menu, then Folder Options. Make sure "Show
common tasks in folders" is selected.
