Problem with my AMD Phenom 9600 and XP

Hello Everyone!

I recently bought myself a Amd Phenom 9600 processor and after i installed
it i reinstalled windows xp but the thing is that when i reinstalled xp it
was hung up on "34 minutes remaining" for about 30 min (when it installs the
HW before you type in your serialnumber and such).
Ok, it tought this was just something with the installer and the phenom
processor but when i rebooted my computer it took around 30 minutes there too
and it does everytime i try to reboot it.
I have installed the proper drivers for the processor and motherboard but it
dosent work anyway, its still a 30 min boot-time.

Anyone knows if this can be solved?

The 34mins is an err thats included in MS kb
Disconnect all periferal devices and start over with a clean install & bios
set to defaults

Okay, i understand. Will this help with the boot-up aswell?

And... what devices would you count as periferal?

Well if its taking a loooong time to boot it likely means its hanging on a
driver
Periferals; any external devices, any extra pci cards, leave only video, any
extra cd/dvd drives, leave only one, any internal card readers. ie just have
the basic minimum system
Once installed and motherboard drivers installed, and win updated then think
about adding back your devices - I prefer to do it one at a time

MrBjornar:
Setting aside the "34 minutes remaining" problem you ran into during the
installation of the XP OS, and even if it takes you 30 minutes or so to boot
to a Desktop - does the system thereafter operate without any problems? So
that the *only* problem at this time is the inordinate amount of time the
system needs to boot? Do we have this right?

Assuming all that is so...

We have to assume that you've properly installed & connected your new
processor and all your other components. So check this out.

And that you've installed the necessary drivers from the motherboard's
installation CD after you got to a Desktop, right? (It's not clear from your
posts whether this is a new motherboard you just installed or an older one
where you just installed a new processor (and RAM?).)

And you've reviewed your motherboard's User Guide to ensure all your BIOS
settings are correct, right?

Assuming there's no hardware issue involved here it's conceivable a BIOS
update may be necessary. See
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1333

But don't update the BIOS just yet should you have an older BIOS. At the
least, use MSI's online chat to determine if they can shed some light on
this problem. (We've used that online chat a couple of times and for the
most part it went well.)

It's possible, that as DL has suggested, something went awry with the
original XP OS install process and all that's necessary is another fresh
install. So it's something to consider and might resolve the problem.

Yep, i have installed the processor correctly and the motherboard i have is
also new. I also got myself new ram.
For now the only "real" problem seems to be the boot time.
It is also true that i installed all the drivers for the mobo from the CD
that i got with it and the CPU drivers from AMD's homepage. Yes, i also
installed the newer drivers for the mobo from msi's homepage later.

Btw, i did check my RAM with memtest86 and my hdd with seagates diagnostic
tools but they said that there was no problem.

I will try to do as DL told me to and remove all hardware that i dont really
"need" and re-install my OS and write back later.

I have the same problem!!

I have just bought an AMD 9500 on an ASROCK ALIVENF5SLI-1394 with 4GB DDR2800.

Mine was freezing at 34 minutes when installing XP 64bit and the animation in the bottom right corner stopped. I have since sent it back and got the memory changed and now it still stops but the animation keeps going.

Mine stops at 37 minutes or 34 and recently once during finalising installation at around 29 minutes. I have checked everything with as many tools as I can find and everything is working ok. I think this may be an xp thing or we have been sold fake chips.

Can someone post if they have a machine with a 9500 or 9600 amd running windows xp 64 bit sucessfully!

I find standard Windows XP freezes too. Anyone know how I can spot a dodgy chip? Any software that can tell me everything about it.. through DOS as I can't get Windows on of course.

I want to try Vista but can't get my hands on a trial. I there one out there? Does someone have link to it or can upload to an ftp for me?

Thanks for reading.
