Problem with Mixed Win XP / 98SE Network

I have a Microsoft MN-700 wireless base station set up,
with 2 wired connections and 2 wireless. One PC has Win
XP Home, and the other 3 have Win 98 SE. All have shared
directories available to the network.

When I get on any of the 3 98 SE machines, click
on "Network Neighborhood", and access the shared
directories on the XP machine, it's almost as if the XP
files are local to the 98 machine. Response time is
excellent.

However, the reverse scenario is terrible. When I get on
the Win XP machine, go to "My Network Places", and try to
access a directory on a Win 98 machine, response time is
pathetic. Sometimes , the process even goes into a "not
responding" mode. When I do finally connect to a 98
machine, things are still bad. I'll go down in a
directory, and then try to go back up and often end up in
a "not responding" mode.

ICF is NOT running on the XP PC. I've tried to "repair"
the LAN connection, tried running without McAfee
VirusScan booting up, reinstalled the network software on
the XP machine using the software that came with the MN-
700, etc. Nothing has worked so far.

Yep; seems to be true on my LAN as well. Instead of indirectly
browsing you way to those files, take a direct path: explicitly
share the folders of interest on the W9x PCs, and map network drives
on the XP PC to those shares. I think you'll find much better
response times.
