Problem with Maxtor OneTouch

I have a Maxtor OneTouch (the original 250GB).
It's been working fine for 2.5 years (WindowsXP) but suddenly it
fails to mount and Windows XP does not see it.
The drive powers up fine and I can't hear any unusual noises from
the drive. I tried both USB and FireWire port.
Neither the Disk Manager in WindowsXP nor Maxtor's own utility
do not see the drive.

Is there anything I can try. I plan to call Maxtor tech support on
Monday.

Maybe you are lycky and just the interface electronics failed.
However these trhings are now well known for failing after
1-3 years (depending on usage patterns) from inadequate cooling.

Assuming you are out of warranty, I would personally just take the
drive out of the external enclosure and plug it directly into my PC to
see if it works.

For my drives, it was a few screws at the back, plus a good tug on the
metal plate w/all the connectors etc on it. The hard drive and
connectors are mounted physically on the same tray, so don't worry too
much about damaging them. The best place to grip to pull the plate out
was using needle nose pliers on the fan vent.

Thanks

Ignore the babblebot.
It's obviously suffering -and has been for years- from inadequate
cooling of it's CPU and it still won't die.

I removed the drive and plugged it in directly as an internal drive, it
works fine.
I did call Maxtor tech support - they told me the drive inside failed
because both
interfaces USB and FireWire do not respond, and the button light does
not blink which is a nonsense - none of these is an indication that the
drive inside failed.

Keep it well cooled and it can live long.

Complete nonsense, agreed. Serves to show the quality of tech
support. Often less knowledgeable than an intelligent user. A sad
state of affairs.

Ahh, where have I seen that before. Oh yes, babblebots on Usenet, a daily reminder.
