problem with login screen

i had a virus that messed up my comp, and i had to uninstall norton and put
on another anti virus to fix it. the problem i have is that i don't have the
icon in the login screen at the bottom left corner for shutting down the
computer. i ran sfc/scannow, and it fixed my .dll files that were messed up,
and i have to update from windows xp service pack one to service pack 2 or 3,
but will that fix the problem? will updating fix any other problem that i
might have later from the virus/norton/system restore?

The shutdown button does not show due to a change in security options.
In Administrative Tools click on Local Security Policy > Local Policies >
Security Options
Find "Shutdown: Allow system to be shut down without having to log on" and
double-click it.
Select enabled
Apply, OK
Restart

Installing SP2 does not address/fix this problem.

It seems your current installation is on shaky grounds, my advice would be a
clean install of Windows XP prior to applying SP2. If you follow this path,
you don't have to install SP1. Be sure to visit Windows Updates after
installing SP2 which may be downloaded and installed separately...
Download SP2:

Order SP2 on CD:

i can't find local security policy in the administrative tools file

Local Security Pol is not available in Home edition.

1. Copy the following lines and paste them in notepad.
