Problem with KB841873

W

Willi Koenen

My Scheduled Tasks (under my day-to-day account suddenly
showed a new line - nothing under name and the rest
changes from nothing to various notices each time I start
it. Clicking on the "non-existing" name provides from lots
of binary info in the left pane and somtimes varios names
of Windows files for the various categories, including
creator. There is no way I can edit or delete this.
Sometimes it results in a fatal error but the Dr.Watson
data is way over my head.
It does not show if signed on under my Admin account!!!.
Not knowing where it came from I restored my June 27/04
drive image. Scheduled Tasks was o.k. and I proceded to
make to (again) make two updates to sundry software and 9
updates to Nortom Internet Security 2004 and 8 Windows
Critical updates. Later on checking - the problem was
again there.
I again restored my June 27 image and this time I proceded
to instal every update one at a time rebooting each time
and checking Scheduled Tasks. No problems for the two
sundry programme updates nor any of the 9 NIS 2004 updates.
I then proceded with windows updates going basically by
dates of the 8 KB, installing KB840315, no problem,
KB842526, no problem then KB841873 (which requires a
mandatory reboot. After that reboot the problem showed up
again. Checking Un-instal it is listed but with a date of
last used of 20/06/2004 ???? (there is no other such KB
listed under history.) Trying to uninstall the message "An
error occurred while trying to remove Windows Hitfix
KB841873. It may have already been un-installed, etc..
What gives???? I trust this will be fixed and serve as a
warning in the interem for others.
In the meantime my work-around is to once again to restore
my June 27 image und update all "but" KB841873.

Thanks for listening,
Willi

Yes it can be un-installed - forgot to sign on as
administrator. DUH.

However, it would have been nice if MS
a) provides the message that user trying to remove has
insuficient rights rather than the message given.
b) incororates in the removal programme also the function
to remove this update info from the history file where it
still shows as "sucessfully installed".
