When I click on a hyperlink in an application such as
Outlook, I receive an error message that the Yahoo
browser has encountered an error and is going to shut
down. I assume that this is a problem with Internet
Explorer 6. Is my only solution to re-install IE6?

Gary,
Not sure about the Yahoo browser and their troubleshooting. Set Internet Explorer as the default browser.

Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Programs and enable the option:
"Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser"
Close IE and open again. Click YES if you are prompted to set it as default browser.

For Windows 2000/XP: : Login as Administrator and perform the above task.

(or)

Download the .reg fix. Set Internet Explorer as default browser (Tested for WinXP):

* Use this only if IE is installed in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer *

IE shuts down without warning

This is generally a video driver issue or hardware issue. Try reducing, and
even turning off hardware acceleration at control panel, display settings,
advanced, performance to see if that stabilises your system. Make sure your
video drivers are up to date. Reducing resolution and or colors may also
help.

Also, it can be an overheating problem. Try running the computer with the
case off for a little while and see if the problem goes away.

Sometimes you may have a corrupt IE cache; create a new one as per the
instructions at the URL below:

Recreating the cache, history and cookie folders when corrupted

Under certain circumstances (xml pages) IE may freeze or crash:
