Hyperlinks not opening in default program with ie8

After upgrading to ie8 my hyperlinks to .jpg files I have within a Excel spreadsheet now open in an explorer window rather than the default program (windows pictures and fax viewer). After some searching I found the thread below

which offers a solution of

"In XP I fixed this with a registry entry in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\Internet:
DWORD ForceShellExecute = 1"

I have done this which cures the problem but causes another:

Whilst hyperlinks to .jpg files now open in the default program hyperlinks from excel to another excel sheet won't open at all,in fact once they have been clicked I can't even open another workbook manually.

As I use hyperlinks from one sheet to another and to .JPG files frequently this is causing me quite a probem.

Any Idea's?
