problem with heading style

A

Alisa Coffin

I am running Word 2007 on both of my computers.
On one computer whenever I try to change the style to any of the headings,
nothing changes, the style stays the same as normal. On the other hand, the
other styles (e.g. title, subtitle, etc.) all work fine. When I look at the
details of the style, I see everything there, meaning font differences, etc.
On the other computer, the style function works just fine and I can change
the normal text to headings. I can see no difference in the way the options
are set in the two different machines. Apart from just working on the second
computer, is there something I can do to fix the first one?

Thanks!

What happens if you select the text and press Ctrl+SpaceBar (to clear direct
font formatting) and Ctrl+Q (to clear direct paragraph formatting)? Does
that help?

I tried what you suggested, selected the text and pressed Ctrl+SpaceBar and
then Ctrl+Q. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem. Here is a list of
what happens when I select the various style options using the Default Style
Set.

To begin, first I select the text, the Style is Normal. Changes referred to
below mean a change from the Normal Style. However, in the hierarchy of
styles, once a level is selected and the change is made, for example Emphasis
Subtle, there is no change between that and Subtle Emphasis.

STYLE EFFECT STYLE WINDOW
No Spacing No change New style called No,Spacing appears
selected
Heading 1 No change New style called Heading,1 appears
selected
Heading 2 No change New style called Heading,2 appears
selected
Heading 3 No change New style called Heading,3 appears
selected
Title CHANGE Title Style is selected
Subtitle CHANGE Subtitle Style is selected
Emphasis Subtle CHANGE New style called Emphasis, Subtle appears select
Subtle Emphasis CHANGE New style called Emphasis, Subtle appears select
Emphasis Intense CHANGE New style called Emphasis, Intense appears
Intense Emphasis CHANGE New style called Emphasis, Intense appears
Strong CHANGE Strong Style is selected
Quote CHANGE Quote Style is selected
Intense Quote No Change Error message
Quote Intense No Change Error message
Subtle Reference CHANGE New style called Subtle, Reference appears
Intense Reference No Change Error message
Book Title CHANGE New style called Title,Book appears
Title Book CHANGE New style called Title, Book appears
List Paragraph No Change New style called List,Paragraph appears.

It doesn't seem to matter which style set I select. The problems are the
same. Also, I need to use a set of customized styles for my dissertation
formatting and these don't seem to work at all on this computer, while they
do work on the second computer I mentioned. I should also mention that I had
none of these problems in Word 2003.

Thanks for any help you can give. This is truly frustrating.

This is definitely strange. What error message was generated as you reset
some of the styles? Did Ctrl+Q generate the message, or Ctrl+SpaceBar, or
both?

There error message I get is "Intense refers to more than one style."

But, again, what triggers the error message?

Also, what character is set as your "list separator" in the regional
settings for Windows?

Again, the above mentioned error message appears whenever I try to select
either Intense Quote or Quote Intense as a style. Can you tell me how to
check the "list separator" in the "regional settings" for Windows? My search
of the help files in Windows gets me to the regional settings tool in the
control panel, but I don't see a "list separator" option there. Am I missing
it? I appreciate any help.

Thanks, Alisa.

So it happens when you *apply* the style? Well, I certainly remember seeing
a similar error before, but unfortunately I cannot remember if a solution
was ever provided. :-(

Was the document created with a different language version of Word? Do you
see the same error if you create a new, blank document, or is it
document-specific?

In Control Panel, double-click the Regional and Language Options icon. In
Windows XP, click the Regional Options tab. click Customize. Then you should
see a "List separator" box. Which character has been specified?

Thanks for your help.

I uninstalled the Office Suite and reinstalled it with all updates. When I
tried it again the same problem occurred. I checked the list separator in the
"customize" section of the regional settings and it was set to <blank>. I
changed it to <comma>. That seems to have solved the problem.

Incidentally, I am running the Windows XP Media Center edition (don't know
if that has anything to do with it). In any case, when I tried to apply the
styles now, they seem to function just fine. I will let you know if I
encounter any further problems down the line. Thanks again for your help!

So the list separator was the culprit after all. Note that, by default,
systems that has a period for decimal sign has a comma for list separator
(and systems that has a comma for decimal sign has a semi-colon for list
separator).

Anyway, I'm glad you got it sorted, and thank you for the feedback.
