Problem with hardware info

B

Brian Snelling

Dell Dimension 4700. Win XP Home. Had hard drive failure and replaced with
new one. Fresh install of XP. Only apparent problem is when using " Help and
Support -- Pick a Task -- Use tools to view your computer information and
diagnose problems -- My Computer Information -- Find information about the
hardware installed on this computer -- My Computer Information -Hardware "
the progress bar stalls at " 18% (collecting Display information) " with
the message " 'document.all[...]' is null or not an object"
Any pointers or suggestions wecome
Thanks
Brian S.

You may want to try a 3rd party product. I would recommend Belarc advisor:

I have and like Belarc Advisor. I was hoping to find the root cause of
my problem in case it gives grief somewhere in the future and perhaps the
Windows help would give more detailed hard drive info.

Do you have a file called INDEX.DAT in the
WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\OfflineCache
Directory?

It missing will cause windows info (msinfo32) from running.

Posted so you can see all the files:
Open Windows Explorer (WinKey+E), under TOOLS, open Folder Options,
then the View Tab. Change these settings:

Select Display the contents of system folders
Select Show hidden files and folders
UnSelect Hide Extensions for known file types
Unselect Hide Protected operating system files (ignore popup)

Then you should be able to explore to the files in question or use
the FIND (WinKey+F) utility.

Thanks for the suggestion - I checked and INDEX.DAT is present. msinfo32
runs correctly, it's only the specific part of Help and Support that stalls.

What happens if you open System Information and navigate around clicking
everything in the left hand pane?

Start | Run | Type: msinfo32 | Click OK

msinfo32 works fine. I'm not sure if my problem area is pure XP or partly a
DEll thing.

Dell has probably mucked about with Help and Support.

Either remember msinfo32 to type into Start | Run that is what I use all of
time. Since I use that all of the time it is very quick.

Or use the System Information shortcut on the Start Menu..
Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Information

Or create a shortcut to msinfo32.exe.
Right click the Desktop, point to New and click on Shortcut.
Paste the following into the location box:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe
Click Next.
Type: System Information in the name box
Click Finish.
