problem with hard drive information

i installed xp and my drive says it only takes up 1.5 gigs
but than in system properties for my main drive it says
that the drive only as 400 mb left. However the drive is
2.8gigs and i have no clue where the leftover 900 mbs
went. If anyone knows what went wrong please let me know
