Problem With Eternet Controller in Device Manager

The Ethernet Controller entry in the device manager has suddenly got a
yellow question mark next to it and the "Found New Hardware" box keeps
popping up when I switch my PC on. I tried to let it search the internet and
my machine for the drivers but it says it can't find them. This has just
happened today and I have not installed anything new. To be honest I'm not
sure what this device is. It might be the Intel Pro Set thing but I'm not
sure.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Try reinstalling the drivers for you network adapter. If you have an onboard
adapter the drivers will be on a disk that came with the PC

Go into Device Manager and (using the menu at the top)
checkmark "show hidden devices". Delete all network
adapters seen then reboot the system. Have the driver file
for the adapter ready, then when it reports it found
hardware, if it doesn't automatically install the driver,
point it to the driver files.

I just did the "Show Hidden Devices" thang and it seems the Intel Pro Set is
installed correctly. The ethernet controller along with the yellow question
mark appear under "Other Devices". Does this make a difference to what you
guys have suggested? To be honest I can't remember if there was anything
under other devices before this showed up. I don't have an ethernet card but
maybe it's built into the mobo.

Yes, if your board has an ethernet port it would do as you
described until given the proper driver.

If this Intel Pro adapter is only 100Mbit, it is entirely
unneeded in your system, you could've simply used the
onboard adapter. However, the Intel Pro probably,
marginally reduces CPU overhead IF you have it's driver
properties (in Control Panel-Networking) set to offload the
checksums. So, practically speaking the Intel NIC is not
needed but if the choice is leaving it sit unused in a
drawer or using it, might as well use it.

Either way, unless you make use of both adapters, you should
remove and/or disable the other one. In the case of the
motherboard-integral adapter, it's most likely disabled in
your bios menu.
