Problem with embedded objects

Here's a puzzle. Suddenly a few days ago I discovered that I could no longer
embed and edit Microsoft Equation objects in Word. Nor could I embed and
edit Excel objects. This is new -- it was possible before.

The only thing that comes to mind that I might have changed is that I tried
installing WinZip 9.0, it came up with one of those dll files that "nobody
seems to want any more, do you want to delete it?" I *thought* I said "no,"
but I suppose there's a chance I didn't.

Anyway: the problem is not limited to Word/Office, since I also tried it in
WordPad. It gave me the same problem, saying "Failed to create object. Make
sure the application is entered in the system registry." Aha! That's the
first time I have even a clue as to how to go about searching for the
problem.

But I don't know anything about the registry, except enough to know that if
I mess it up, it's doomsday for me.

So I thought I'd first ask for an expert's advice on how to proceed to
investigate this problem. In general: what could it be that would suddenly
make it impossible to work with embedded objects? What kind of link is
"broken" that wasn't broken before?

Thanks for any help,

John

Try uninstalling and reinstalling MS Office

also

Try re service packing to the latest (SP4) level

Steve,

Thanks for responding.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling MS Office

Actually, I did try that. No luck.

Okay, I'll give that a try. I may have only gotten to the SP3 level.

But I have a bad feeling this might be a fundamental OLE problem I've gotten
somehow, that may be independent of Office per se.

But first things first, I'll try re-service-packing now!

I've now service packed Win2K to the SP4 level, and also Office itself to
its last level, which seems to be SP3 (from around november 2002).

No luck.

I'm now convinced that somehow OLE itself is broken. I have confirmed that I
can't insert any objects into a Word doc, whether Equation, or Excel, or
Chart, etc. The only explanation I have is that somehow, some way, I
accidentally removed some file, some DLL, that is essential for the
operation of OLE. So I guess I should rephrase the query: What are the files
necessary for the operation of OLE, and is there some way I can check to see
whether I have them?

Once again, thanks for checking in.

Sigh ... just verified that indeed all automatic services are shown as
started.

Have you tried logging in under a different account, to find out if its
a corrupt profile?

Just tried. No, got the same result. (Although it's always impressive to see
how a new user can be completely customized.)

No, I'm not running Norton. But it might be a good idea anyway to see what
happens when I turn off my McAfee anti-virus. I kind of doubt that's what it
is, but heck I'll try it all.

may be getting to desperate measures time then, as perviously mentioned
try loggin on under another account just to check its not a duff profile
and assuming it still is not working it may be worth considering a
repair install from the W2K install CD?

You're probably right ... okay, thanks, I'll check out that route now!

Thanks again,
