Problem with Doanloaded Program Files (DAMAGED)

S

Sam

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro (SP2) and current
MS updates installed (except for month of Jan 2007). I looked at the file
entries in the Downloaded Program Files (C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program
Files) and noticed the status of many of the files were listed as DAMAGED.
There were more of the DAMAGED files than listed below, but I was able to
right click on specific files, select the update command, and the file
status then become Installed. However, the files listed below, when I
selected update, no status change was noticed. I clicked on these files
again and the update command was not listed, only the remove and properties
commands were then listed as available.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated in how to resolve the below
problems. Thanks Sam.

1. Active X Control {01010E00-5E80-11D8-9E86-0007E96C65AE} DAMAGED

2. Active X Control {01012101-5E80-11D8-9E86-0007E96C65AE} DAMAGED

3. Active X Control {3253534D-9980-0010-8000-00AA00389B71} DAMAGED

4. CTAdjust Class DAMAGED

5. MUWebControl Class DAMAGED

6. OPUCatalog Class DAMAGED

7. OPUCatalog Class DAMAGED

8. Shockwave ActiveX Control Unknown

9. Update Class DAMAGED

10. WUWEBControl Class DAMAGED

Sam, I think you posted this yesterday, yes? There was at least one
response to it. Have you seen it? If you can't find a previous post, then
search for it on your name as Author, using Google Groups Advanced Search,
in the newsgroup microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

This is a peer to peer newsgroup with volunteers from all over the world.
It can take 24-48 hours for someone two might know the answer to respond.
If a post gets no response you should wait several days before posting
again, which is not the case here, and in your second post indicate that
it's a repost with no responses.

Here is the link to the Google groups search.

You're using OE for this post so I don't know why you haven't seen the reply
to your post. Have you downloaded sufficient headers and searched for your
name?

Rock, thanks for your reply. I did not see my original post or the reply
using OE. This same problem happen last year and I never did find out what
caused the problem. However, I am some what sure this time as to what
actually happened. On 11 January, when I visited the
"microsoft.public.windowsxp.general" newsgroup, nothing was downloaded. I
suspected that either the microsoft news server was out of commission or my
ISP (AT&T) had the problem. On 12 January when I visited the
windowsxp.general newsgroup, I did see the messages being downloaded as
usual, but did not see my original post.

When I did the goggle search tonight as you suggested, I noticed that there
were specific messages listed on the search that were not on my computer.
Checking the OE header dates also confirms that I am missing messages - OE
last message for Wednesday was 1/10/2007/ 11:56am, and the next entry after
that was 1/11/2007 2:58pm. I should note that yesterday, I accomplished the
View/Refresh multiple times hoping that new messages would download, but no
luck.

Tonight, I checked the OE options to be sure they were as I had originally
set them up when I received my computer. I went to Tools/Options, Read Tab,
and the following were checked as I wanted them to be.
a. Get 700 headers at a time
b. Automatically download messages when viewing in Preview Pane

I hope the above makes sense, it is rather late for an old guy like me!!!
Have a good weekend, Sam.

P.S. I would like to thank Wes for his reply to my original post. Any
suggestion as to how this should be done??

There was no problem with the server yesterday that I know of. Are you
getting the messages directly from the microsoft server?

Setting up Outlook Express Newsreader
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

Not sure if I remember his post correctly, but if I do, just right click and
delete the damaged entries. They will be reinstalled if you perform
whatever action is associated with the item again. For example if one of
those is associated with an online virus scan, if you were to go to that
site and do the scan again the item would be downloaded.

Rock, thanks for your reply. My ISP is AT&T and the news server is
news.houston.sbcglobal.net. thru which I receive the messages from
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general. I should have noted more clearly in my
previous reply that I did find Wesley Vogel's reply to my original post with
the Google search, and he did recommend removing all of the damaged entries.
Thanks again for your help, Sam.

Don't go through the news server. Directly link to the MS server. See the
link I gave you for how to do that.
